Let's make good use of the power of suggestion :)
Placing a timer in the bedroom with a 'tantruming' child extricates the parent from monitoring time out. Often times when the timer sounds off, this serves as a subliminal message, signaling the child's brain to turn off the tantrum, more quickly :)
How long to set the timer?
Experiment with, oh, let's say five minutes
If tantrum continues do not intervene
When tantrum ends, and child has been taught to say 'I'm calm enough to talk about the problem, now', parent smiles, welcomes child into the land of three step problem solving logic (outlined in a previous post) and states, I wonder if the timer can help you to soothe yourself more quickly, next time :)
BTW ... That might work for adult tantrums, too :)
