THOUGHTS RELATING TO OUR VACA-CONFERENCE IN THE MIDWEST

Our time spent in the Midwest saw Will attending
A medical conference that's specifically designed to
Further educate orthopedists who conduct IME's for
The Industrial Commission (IME stands for
Independent—thus objective—medical exams) so as to
Determine whether those on disability are
Fit to return to work (any work) rather than collecting
Full-benefit-disability checks, forever, though it's
Documented that many on disability have been seen
Bending over, fully exerting every muscle throughout
Their bodies while—for example—separating
Their speed boats from hooks attached to
The rear bumper of their trucks followed by pushing
Or pulling or doing whatever it takes to launch
Their motorized crafts before jumping aboard to
Waterski with friends and family—as seen on
DVD's filmed by P.I.'s hired by litigators (employed by
The Industrial Commission) to check out the validity of
A chronic patient's claims of experiencing pain levels
That climb so high as to be forced to live an utterly sedentary
Life—and though many more claims are credible than not, it’s
Those feigning disability who fuel Will's interest in
Keeping up to date with the most current literature concerning
Forensic orthopedics, which is why my husband’s
Well educated, professional opinion (unlike that of
Many other physicians) is based, not in what
He ‘thinks' is true but in evidence based documentation that's
Spot on up to date— In short, Will takes this aspect of
His career as seriously as he'd made certain that
His expertise with a scalpel was ‘sharply’ tuned into
State of the art procedures in the operating arena, which is why
He is so often sought after, not only by attorneys employed by
The Industrial Commission but by defense attorneys
Representing individuals, who had been disabled on
The job—At any rate, Will attends this conference
Annually. and this year it was held in the city of our birth, suggesting
That we could catch up with friends and family, so rather than
Spending three days at the meeting, as usual, we chose to fly in
Two days before the first seminar convened and
Stayed a day longer than usual, and if you suggest that
That decision would not be uncommon for those traveling to
The city where they were raised so as to spend time
With extended family—I’d suggest that you know
Too little about the emotional strain that I’d faced up to
Each time travel to my birthplace proved necessary ever since
My father’s death in July of 2001 (preceding 9/11)
More (concerning repressed childhood experiences that, remaining
Unhealed, served to exacerbate subconscious emotional pain), later ...

This conference, which always relates to chronic pain
Differs from professional meetings that we'd attended during
The years when Will’s expertise was surgically active for
This reason:  Seminars at those earlier conferences (held in
Ski towns throughout the USA) convened early in
The morning and late in the afternoon, freeing
Many daytime hours for docs to join their families
Slaloming down snow covered slopes to our hearts' content
While ear buds, connecting our olfactory sense of rhythm to
The beat of soundtracks emanating from CD players worn round
Our necks offered our leg muscles reason to keep time with
Self empowering musicality as exemplified by skiing to hits from
Rocky and Rocky II—I mean, just imagine the fully energizing
Impact of Slaloming in time to The Eye of The Tiger (though
Personally, my preference chose Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing and
Anything recorded by The Supremes)—so, those vaca-conferences
Differed quite distinctly from meetings in which seminars
Start at 7am, break for lunch for an hour and end at 6pm
Needless to say, much of the info that Will absorbs
Year after year, is repetitive; however, he states that
There's always something new to learn, and if you ask what made
Our trip to this particular conference different from all of
Those that ‘we’ve’ attended during recent years, I'd reply—two things:
The meeting's location and a huge change for the better concerning
My frame of mind, most especially when I find myself considering
The sad fate of friends and family who struggle daily to manage distress
Associated with emotional or physical illnesses that
Medical knowledge offers little hope of creating change for
The better at this late stage of our lives—more about
My newly proactive attitude concerning my acceptance of
Life's harshest realities with positive focus intact, coming up ...
As for now, two of our dearest friends from Seattle (who are
Here to purchase a winter home nearby) are due to stop by
Momentarily, and as we four rejoice in each other's
Good health, which sustains our ability to travel so as to
Enjoy time with loved ones whose homes are hundreds of
Miles from our own, I’ll bid you adieu, for now—
Ohhmm ...
