How might a healthy mind shift take place, today?
That is the question ...
Where am I, today?
I am on the bus with the child
She is the butt of mean minded mouths—
Nevermore!
Nevermore to shrink up and cower in silence
Nevermore invisible while her self esteem is torn to shreds
Today, She and I pick up every shred, every broken thread
Painstakingly I encourage the child to weave
Every shorn thread of dignity into an afghan
Not an afghan, comforting the two of us
Not an afghan, shielding us from a world of pain
Not an afghan to pull over our heads, hoping
The world will go away
If asked to colorize our afghan
My choice would be red
Though our afghan is as red as a cape
No bandoleer need stab this bull
Softening the beast within for the kill
Today, courage readies itself
To face down the fear that
Tears my mind in two, unnecessarily, repeatedly
Though tears release emotion too deep to trace
The child and I stand up, proud and tall
First we turn up the music on Rocky High
Next, we face the black run, awaiting below
And piercing the snow with our poles, first left then right
Off we go, she and I, cruising with a knee bending swoop
Toward thriving throughout the rest of my life—
And once my cadence is sure and steady
You'll hear my voice ring out as strong and true
As the power of one is known to do
I am woman, she will heal, hear me roar!
