WHY ARE OLD FRIENDS THE BEST FRIENDS?

Simply put—
Old friends are the best friends—why?
Because these treasured friendships
Have stood the test of time
Currently, two couples, friends from
Our college days, are in town
One husband and wife, who call Seattle home
Are what we call snowbirds as, each year
They fly south to winter ‘neath the warmth of
The sun during the wet, dreary months when
Their home, up north weathers downpours of
Rain or downfalls of snow and not much else in between
The second couple, who for decades have
Feathered their nest in San Diego, are enjoying
Our five star guest room, this weekend
And as, over these many years, we six have celebrated
The good times, together, as well as being present whenever
Life offered reason for one or another to weather
A spectrum of deeply personal,-wrenching storms, and
With that said, you can imagine our delight, as over
Recent years, we’ve been thoroughly enjoying
Weekends filled with heartfelt gratitude for
Each other’s friendship, knowing that
Life is short, and as we’ve advanced in age
This reality has become crystal clear to one and all:
Partaking in each other’s company during these
Treasured weekends will be ours to enjoy only
As long as the fickle finger of fate gifts
Each of us with the good fortune of
Long life and good health—And as the first signs of
Stirrings can be heard beyond my bedroom door
It’s likely that my guests, who have awakened, are
Hoping to smell the coffee, which has yet to be brewed
